(Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Maths)

Thursday 2nd November saw Plymouth Campus hold their very first STEAM day.

The day involved 6 students being given a challenge to solve.  The challenge was:

“to build a wind turbine that would be capable of lifting a weight off the floor”

The team delegated responsibilities for different tasks, project manager, researcher, materials tester, timekeeper etc.

The first task was to brainstorm ideas, followed by research and then prototyping, testing and making changes before finally measuring it’s capabilities.

The whole day was a great success and well done to…

Gianina

Oakley

Maddison

Lachlan

Cherokee

Bonita

… for their excellent attitude and team working skills and a great end result which works.  Thank you to Anton for covering the day with recording photography!

By Madison:

“Our memories from this excellent day are funny enjoyable memories. On this steam day the team Lachlan, Bonita, Cherokee, Oakley, Gianina and Madison worked on making a wind turbine that could lift the heaviest weight possible. During the time left at the end we managed to get it lifting 900 grams, which is a lot more than we predicted. By having some sort of resource that could blow on the blades and make the wind turbine rotate, lifting the weights up. It was an excellent day with the sun shining outside and the sky dazzling blue. Everyone was happy and feeling very enthused that the project would all come together and that it would work. Of course everything did come together but, a lot better than we had actually expected it to. I would certainly recommend trying your best at the work given to you so that you stand a chance of being chosen by teachers to take part in this day. There is normally one every year so work hard for a chance to take part.”
